Exchanging your UK driving licence for a Spanish one (2026)

Updated June 2026 · 4 min read

There's been a lot of confusion about UK licences in Spain since Brexit — but the picture in 2026 is reassuringly clear.

The agreement is active

Under the UK–Spain reciprocal agreement, in force since March 2023, most UK licence holders can exchange their licence for a Spanish one without taking a driving test. It remains active and working in 2026.

The 6-month rule

Once you become a legal resident, you can drive on your UK licence for six months. After that you must exchange it. Tourists can drive on a UK licence for up to six months per visit.

How the process works

Don't let it lapse

Driving past the six-month deadline on a UK licence means you're technically driving unlicensed — with insurance implications. It's worth starting early, and I can walk you through each step and the appointment so nothing slips.

Please note: this is general guidance to help you understand the process — not legal advice. Rules vary by region and change over time. Expat Paperwork helps you understand and prepare your own paperwork and connects you with a licensed gestor or lawyer where one is legally required.
